Whether you are hitting the gym or going for a hike, you need activewear or workout clothes.

Finding the right activewear fabrics is often the hardest part when sewing our workout wear. There are so many types, brand names, and proclaimed functions, and picking the wrong fabrics can result in pretty unpleasant workouts.

If you’re looking for workout leggings, go for a pair made with performance fibers (i.e. synthetics) like nylon or polyester. They’re usually moisture-wicking, more durable and opaque, and have better stretch than cotton.

For leggings, you want something with good moisture management properties, around 260gsm or more (anything less than about 250gsm probably isn’t going to pass the ‘squat test’). A high percentage of Spandex/ Lycra/Elastane will provide good recovery – anywhere from 8-30%, depending on the blend.

If you’re really sweating it out, then you want a really good wicking fabric to keep you dry and comfortable – but if you’re working at a lower intensity, then you might not need it to be quite so high-performance.

Wicking is the transport of moisture through a fabric. Moisture can pass between fibres, yarns and through the fibre itself. The ability for moisture to pass through a fabric will depend on the fabric construction and the fibre type. Synthetic fibres tend to dry quickly and are the most commonly used fibre in athletic wear now.

The first thing to remember when considering what fabric is best for sportswear is the needs of the consumer. Different sporting activities require a specific type of clothing. For instance, sports like football and basketball require apparel that is loose and comfortable. On the other hand, activities such as biking or running can be dangerous if you wear loose clothing because baggy pants could easily get tangled up in the bike pedals.
